A Brief History of the Olympic Games

Origins of the Games

Only five sports — aquatics, athletics, cycling, fencing and gymnastics — have appeared in each of the 30 iterations of the Olympic Games. Others, such as croquet and karate, have had much shorter Olympic runs and were discontinued immediately after debut. In the marathon, there were several early leaders, notably Teddy Flack of Australia, who had won the 800 and 1,500 metres.
